Can You Learn How To Dunk A Basketball?
Before We Start
Before an typical player can even think about dunking, he needs to take an inventory and be realistic. How tall a person is and his athletic abilities are the two major factors that determine from the beginning if he will ever be able to dunk a basketball. That's not to say that it isn't possible, but there are not many 5-6 players that will ever be able to jump high enough to dunk a basketball. In fact, even a six foot player will have to have above-average jumping ability in order to be able to dunk. Be rational with yourself. At the same time, don't limit how high you can jump before you even try. Many people have made amazing increases in their vertical jump. It takes hard work, but it will be worth it.
Things that should be evaluated before you start:
1.) Is height a difficulty? You can't change this. You CAN learn to jump higher, but you still might never be able to dunk. But, that is alright! Develop other aspects of your game.
2.) Are you carrying too much weight? By being overweight, you are limiting yourself right from the start.
3.) How athletic are you in general? Some people just have the "gift" of being able to jump. You can develop it as well, but understand where you are starting. Measure your vertical leap before you begin. This will show how you are progressing.
4.) Are you in good physical shape? Jumping uses muscles from the whole body. Just having physically powerful legs alone is not enough.
Let's Get Started
Begin by making sure you are in the best overall shape you can be. This includes all other body parts as well as your legs. In order to reach your ultimate jumping potential, you need to be in good overall shape. You use every part of your body while jumping, so it only makes sense that your entire body needs to be in shape. While this part of the process isn't glamorous, it is necessary. A strong basis is needed to achieve the best results. Begin here and you will be rewarded down the road.
