The Need for Search Engine
Optimization
Search Engine Optimization or SEO
involves using tools and procedures in an effort to make your website rank highly in search engine results.
Being able to get your site on the first page of Google, or on any of the major search engines, will
publicise your existence online. If you can get your site exposed on the first page in the search engines,
then you will generate traffic that could mean potential sales and income.
Most people browsing web pages only
seem to take an interest in the first ten search results, so it will be in your interests to be high up on
the first page to increase the probability of being clicked on. The more traffic to your site, the more
potential for your business.
An essential element before any
online campaign begins is keyword research. When you consider the millions of web pages online, it will be
very difficult to compete with many others on highly competitive keywords. A normal strategy these days is to
search for and use lower competitive keywords as these will give you a better chance of getting rated in the
search engines.
Your site pages can be built up with
relevant content. Articles can be written with related keywords and appropriate articles submitted to article
directories as a means of attracting visitors to your website. Various link building methods are available to
help generate a high traffic volume, and these can be found by researching online. Once you have your site
established for your chosen keywords, then you can consider using more competitive keywords and thus improve
your search engine ranking.
Some important SEO techniques to use
on your site:
Page Title As the page title
is the first thing a search engine sees in determining what a particular page is about, it’s important to
include a keyword or two in the title tag. Don’t overdo it, though, as keyword stuffing will be considered as
spam.
MetaTags The description and
keyword tags are the main meta tags used as these are what visitors see when your link is viewed. Again, use
a few relevant keywords but avoid keyword stuffing.
Header Tags These are used to
indicate the main points of your content for search engines and users.
Alt Attributes Brief and
descriptive alt attributes on images includes text to your source code that the search engines can view when
indexing your website.
XML Sitemap A Sitemap helps
site visitors navigate through your site. The XML Sitemap, however, enables search engines to link to and
index all of your website pages.
Search engine optimization is an
ongoing task as there are many things requiring site changes. These will include collecting information on
popular keywords related to your sites theme or niche. All of these, hopefully, will result in increased
traffic and sales.
